Starting An On-line Business – Choosing The Right Domain Name

Selecting A Domain Name

Within the business of building a large range of Niche sites, domain names are visiting doubtless be your single largest cost, or at least close to the prime if you’re outsourcing most of your work. Domain names are necessary for several reasons, not the least of that is that you don’t need to be wasting cash on poor choice domain names. During this tutorial, I am going to provide you with the data you would like to confirm you’re choosing the foremost acceptable domain name for your sites.

First, for those that don’t know what a domain name is, it’s merely the net address of your site – espn.com could be a domain name, for example. A site name is an key step in obtaining set up and online. It’s the first issue your customers will see. You need to make a nice 1st impression. Your potential customers can see your name in several completely different places:

1. Natural Search results like on Google, Yahoo and Microsoft search 2. Video Marketing 3. Pay Per Click Advertisements that you just run 4. Ezines / Newsletters that you just publish or run ads in 5. Email and Forum Signatures 6. Off line advertising like newspapers, direct mail, business cards or magazines.

There are a number of things to think about when buying a domain name(s). Here are the key considerations you may need to run through previous to creating your purchase:

Top Domain Name Don’ts:

1. Don’t use excessive dashes within the domain name. 2. Do not use unrelated phrases within the domain name. 3. Do not use too several keywords in the domain name. 4. Do not repeat the primary keyword within the domain name.

Top Domain Dos:

1. Do use the primary keyword phrase in your domain name. 2. Be as specific as attainable for your keyword phrase (long tail keyword phrases) 3. Place the primary keyword phrase at the start of the domain name. 4. Embrace commonly used related phrases in the name like “news”, “tips”, etc 5. Use action keywords like “low cost”, “discount”, “purchase”, “deals”, “get”, etc. 6. Use prime level domains like.com,.web,.information,, or.org,

Some further tips:

1. Use a particular keyword – or higher however, a long tail keyword phrase – in your domain name. I do not suggest using multiple keywords and positively DO NOT repeat the identical keyword within the domain name.

2. Put your primary keyword at the beginning of the domain name. Let’s use an example to illustrate: Suppose you’re selling garden tools. Not simply any garden tools; you sell low-cost, high-quality garden tools. The name of your company is Garden Tool World. Using the guidelines higher than, you will purchase the domain names for your company. However what about your product?

The key here is to seem for names for your product domain that individuals will be searching for. When a potential customer goes to a hunt engine, can he or she explore for “low-price high-quality garden tools”? Or the customer hunt for “Low-cost Garden Tools”? From our earlier research, you’ll be able to realize out what people are wanting for. Thus if individuals are trying for “Cheap Garden Tools,” then your domain name may be cheapgardentools dot com.

Choosing a site name is a crucial half of the general promoting method and ought to not be taken lightly. Build sure your domain name represents your company, product, and image, and you will be setting a great foundation for future sales.

3. If you run into issue in getting the domain name that you wish,, attempt using action words at the top of your domain name. Samples of this would come with for sale, discount, on eBay, deals, etc. You could conjointly use tips, blog or info., for example. If you had a web site using videos to coach roofers, you may accompany roofervideos.com. Another idea would be to put a number behind your keyword. For instance, cheapgardentools442.com would work just plus cheapgardentools.com because your keyword phrase is at the beginning of the domain name.

4. Don’t be afraid to use keywords that reach out and grab attention. Words like warning, alert, cure and warning are all such terms.

5. By all means that, DO NOT use words in your domain name that don’t have anything to try and do with what it is your site is about.

six Use only well-known high level domains such as.com,.net,.data,.org &.us. Keep far from domains like.tv and.biz. Credibility is essential – sticking with high level domain names will help you in that department. In fact, if you’ll get.com, that’s the manner to travel, but if the name you would like is not available in.com, one among the other top level names will be simply fine.

If you find you’re having trouble coming back up with a domain name for your venture, you can visit Nameboy.com. That web site can generate plenty of domain name suggestions for you primarily based on the keywords you enter. Another website I like to use is Instant Domain Search. This explicit website “helps you find a site name as quick as you’ll type.”

7. Stay away from domain names with hyphens in them. Whereas this used to be a smart idea, it no longer is. Using domain names with hyphens in them can have an adverse impact on your ability to rank highly in the search engines.

8. Keep it as short as possible. Although some places allow you to register a name with up to sixty three characters, you have got to keep in mind that folks need to be able to recollect it and easily sort it into their browser. Attempt to register the shortest name that your customers and different web site guests will associate together with your net site. The final rule of thumb is, keep it under seven characters if doable (not as well as the suffix). While the vast majority of your potential customers will be clicking on a link, there are those who can type in your domain name.

9. Go with.com when in any respect possible.

Dot what? There are various suffixes available now. For businesses, we have a tendency to recommend a.com suffix. It is the primary extension that most folks attempt when looking out for a internet site. Conjointly, since it’s one among the oldest extensions,.com shows that your business has been around for a while and that you have a well-established presence on the Web.

10. Register your domain now. Domain names are being snatched up faster than candy at the St. Patrick’s Day parade. You must register soon unless you would like to get stuck with “the-domain-name-that-no-one-wanted.net.” You are doing not have to have a webmaster or an e-commerce department or a internet style consultant or…. Heck, you do not even want a net page. Simply get out there and register before you lose the chance to induce the name you really want.

11. Ask around. When you have settled on several available name selections, see what your friends and purchasers have to say. A name which will build excellent sense to you’ll be too onerous for alternative individuals to remember. Is your domain simple to mention? Is it exhausting to spell? Do you have got to clarify why you chose the name?

12. Don’t pay heaps of money. At just one occasion, corporations were able to induce away with charging reservation fees plus a “necessary” $70 InterNIC fee. A range of years ago, it had been set that alternative corporations should be in a position to compete to sell domain names. This has lowered costs dramatically. At the time I am putting this on ink, you’ll be able to get a private.com domain at one&1 for as very little as $6.ninety nine that is the best worth on the market by far. 1&1 is the sole top registrar that has non-public registrations at no further cost.

13. An vital aspect of your domain name: You must check to see if your domain has ever been used by someone else. If your whole new domain name was used for spam or unethical internet practices, it can be extremely troublesome to induce it indexed in the key search engines. This can be not an issue you want to deal with. Take a look at your potential domain name and see if it has ever been owned. If it’s been owned, take a look at the archives to work out if someone was breaking any rules with this domain. Trust me; you will thank me if you discover out that it’s been abused in the past. There’s no reason to create search engine optimization more durable on us if we will avoid it!

If you’re thinking that that if you have found the proper domain name and have confirmed any previous use, however you’re not quite positive if it is the one… register it anyway before somebody else does!

Choosing A Quality Web Host

If you are individual enjoy me, you’d current love to have a website on the Internet but you fitting have no impression how to lick about it. All this introduction of net hosting, bandwidth, tape space, and other jargon can cause one to say, “This is too complicated and technical, I just wanted to have a place to put all of my favorite skateboarding photos, cool information on ramp designs, and the best places to skate!” To get a website on the Web you have to go through a web host. The question is how do you find the web host for you? If you type ‘web host’ into your search engine like Google you will get thousands of sites. Hit on one of these and like any product on the market you will see all sorts of persuasive propaganda to incite you to use their company; that is if you can decipher any of the technical jargon that only computer-heads can comprehend.

Some web hosts offer free business cards with an account; some probably offer free watches?like all consumer industries you the buyer must beware. I’m a writer so I’ll use the analogy of a writer’s journal. The journal I like must not be too big or small in book size. It also must have a good amount of space allocated to each day, again not a whole page but not just a few lines. Of course I also want it to be cheap but of a good quality that won’t fall apart while I’m using it, and I hope it would last for posterity. I just want the diary, some nice pictures in it are O.K. but unnecessary especially if it adds to the price. It’s the same with a web host and web site scenario. You want to get the right deal for you, enough space and enough access to the public that you wish to associate with. As a novice who doesn’t understand all the jargon this can pose a problem. Are you an individual, small business, blog, or a big time corporation? What do you need and how do you get it? As far as I can tell the web hosting business is a lot like the fast food business.

The big corporations have strict guidelines, will offer you special deals, and have monthly ‘cheeseburger specials’. But, I’ve always been more interested in the ‘Mom and Pop’ small time diners who have that real caring human approach. You know you are a customer and a person, not just a number on a sales receipt. I believe the hosting companies are the same. A smaller hosting company will probably treat its users with more honest integrity as well as having more flexibility in dealing with your individual situation. They can often tailor web site packages to accommodate exactly what you are looking for as well as the ability to update them quickly when your needs change. My advice is to contact a few of the smaller companies.

Look for ones with good reputations or just arbitrarily email them and compare results from different places. Which one do you feel most comfortable with? Go for it; ask as many questions as you can, see how the different hosts differ in their answers. Try one; if it doesn’t work out try another, it’s really easy to move around. Don’t be afraid, you’ve got nothing to lose except the fear itself!

SEO And The Gem Dealer

Some people have a hard time understanding the concept of Search Engine Optimization (SEO). The notion of developing a website based on principles that involve certain words seems confusing and perhaps even a bit like hocus-pocus.

In its most simple form SEO is something like the brightest thread in a tapestry or the point leader in a basketball game. This method is something like finding your favorite sports drink in a store filled with similar bottles.

The use of Search Engine Optimization provides an intense level of satisfaction for search engines that have been looking specifically for the best use of virtually every keyword or phrase imaginable.

Let me suggest one more analogy related to this principle. Imagine a diamond buyer looking for the best overall selection of diamonds. This buyer investigates every possible seller in the world and makes the determination to buy from a seller that has proven they have the greatest number of gems to choose from.

When you approach website design you absolutely must have at least a primary understanding of SEO principles. This method is reminiscent of that diamond dealer and his search for the seller with the most diamonds. Your consistent use of the keyword or phrase you have chosen is like a growing collection of diamonds that search engines are looking for.

Search engines are on a never-ending search for the best sites. When they get to your online business site they subject it to complete scrutiny. They will scan every word searching for that common thread, highest scorer or sports drink. How does your site stack up against other sites that have also selected the keyword or phrase you are using?

There are a few things you should pay attention to when you develop your keyword-enriched site.

The Things to Do

Make sure you research keywords or phrases that may provide the best response from search engines.

Make sure you develop your website with the chosen keyword used in every section of the site. This includes sections such as “About Us” as well as the knowledge-based content you will provide.

Make sure to add new content on a regular basis. Search engines pay attention to sites that are consistently updated.

The Things to Avoid

Make sure you do not stuff your site with the chose keyword or phrase. A percentage of 5% or less is about right. When you stuff your content with too many keywords it can be awkward to read and usually raises a red flag for search engines.

Make sure you do not fill portions of each page with invisible keywords. This is something that has been done primarily in the past to get a higher ranking, but virtually all of these sites have been caught and penalized for bad online behavior.

Make sure you do not treat the impact of SEO with contempt or disregard. This concept can have the greatest impact on future site-based traffic.

Search engines want to find your site and they want to reward you with improved site rankings, but they need your cooperation in helping them find your site so they can let others know you exist.

Web Design – Have You Forgotten The Call To Action?

In writing there is a term called ‘passive voice’. In literature this is where the narrator TELLS the reader what is going on instead of allowing dialogue and event descriptions to SHOW the story to the reader and allow their imagination to fill in the gaps. In the first case the reader is not very involved in the action of the story, but in the second scenario they are not only invited into the full body of the story, but they feel as if they are part of the action.

In web design you have to find a balance between simply showing your site visitor what you have to offer and being pushy in an effort to make a sale. On approach is heavy handed and the other is a bit timid in approach.

When you TELL, but don’t SHOW you wind up with a very sterile site that infuses no one with passion to make a purchase. Visitors simply leave with a lot of facts and figures they aren’t sure what to do with.

When you SHOW, but don’t TELL you can get a visitor excited about the product without ever bringing them back to a call to action.

Let’s see if this makes sense. Let’s say you have a website dedicated to cosmetics. Your knowledge-based content does a great job of pulling the site visitor in on an emotional level. They learn a lot and find your site valuable. However, this visitor may well leave your website never even considering a purchase. They may have even thought the article was simply part of a site designed to extend knowledge to visitors. You have to remember that sometimes your web pages are accessed through a search engine and if there is no call to action they may exit with good information and nothing more.

A call to action at the end of your knowledge based content encourages your reader to take the information they have gleaned from your site and apply it to a purchase of products from your website (or as past of an affiliate revenue sharing program) that can tangibly enhance what they have learned.

Never be afraid to place a call to action in your website. You need to let your visitor know they can do something with what they now know.

If you are not passive about drawing your audience into an understanding of the product you should also not be passive about making it easy for your customers to take the next step.

Interestingly you cannot make the assumption that by simply describing something better you will increase your sales. While it is likely sales are predicated on knowing what you are buying there is a greater chance of a sale when someone understand the emotional tie to the product.

When you help your reader connect with your product in an active way you may find not only new customers, but also motivated repeat customers that willingly share your story and perhaps your call to action.

Can I Create A Cheap Website With Ecommerce?

Isn’t the internet a fabuolous thing?! This is my first foray into blogging (so forgive me if it’s not quite as you might expect from a blog!) and it’s great that I can be sharing this information with potentially millions of people around the globe.

After having to leave my last job after the multimillionaire owner of the company stopped paying his staff, I decided that I wanted to start my own business venture. I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do, but I knew that I wanted to work for myself. Don’t worry, I will get to the point and this isn’t a post claiming you can make a fortune, but the story is relevant, if you can bear with me.

I used to work in the property industry and so already had an interest in property and thought of a “brilliant idea” offering a service to property investors (my poor husband has to endure my “brilliant ideas” at least 3 times a week!). The idea was good, but I needed somebody who could offer cheap web design. Not only that, but they also had to offer ecommerce and it had to be the right price ie very cheap indeed! If any of you have researched this area, you will know that ecommerce is extremely expensive. My husband is a painter and about a year ago, he had set his own amateur website up with a view to selling his art. He got the website up and running and it looked OK, but he experienced major problems when trying to add an online shopping cart to the site. In utter frustration, he finally contacted half a dozen quotes for a very simple ecommerce solution and was shocked to get quotes back STARTING from £600!!

Anyway, getting back to my own endeavour, I had come across an article reviewing various Do It Yourself create a website packages. With this in mind, I decided to grab the bull by the horns, fork out the massive £35 (!!!) and create my own website, complete with online shopping cart. The tool I used to do this is called Mr Site. The reviews varied – some people loved it and equal amounts hated it, but at the price, it was certainly worth a go.

And so it came to be that I was able to create my own website, complete with ecommerce for only £35.

Unfortunately the property market collapsed not long after this brilliant idea, so the property business had to be shelved. Luckily however, it naturally led onto one even more brilliant! Using the same website design package, I decided to create a more professional website, complete with ecommerce and start designing affordable sites for other people. Business has been slow, but I’m sure will improve once the initial stumbling block of marketing has been overcome. I am offering a complete website design service including ecommerce for £149 for 5 pages, which is extremely competitive and so far my customers have been delighted with the end result.

For those who are artistically minded and know their way around some graphic packages (or can learn!) why not give it a go yourself? The days of being ripped off for an ecommerce site are numbered.

Get Results By Not Making These Web Design Mistakes

Three Common Mistakes When Designing A Web Site

I like to compare our society to the Mazda’s ‘Zoom Zoom’ slogan. Everyone today is just zoom zooming all over the place. So, who wants to read your long drawn out explanation of well…anything? Or scroll left to right? Or even read out of date material? No one. Described below are reasons why and solutions to the problem.

Yes, You Can Have To Much Information

When creating your site keep it simple. No need for paragraph after paragraph, simple short sentences will do just fine. Use creative eye catchers such as:

• Customized bullets make things easy to read, reduce space and draw attention
• Numbers (1, 2, 3) do too, they lead the reader to what they want to know

Our zoom zoom society wants their information quick and easy. Lists with subheadings are extremely popular, as well as links to another page explaining a topic. Even if it explains something minor it stands alone, is easy to access, and quick to read. This keeps the scroll bar longer and the page shorter. The viewer’s eye easily gets lost in all that information and no one wants to scroll forever.

Click, Click is easier and less frustrating than skimming.

Pictures, video’s and other graphics distract when they are everywhere. They draw attention away, not too. Highlight what is important with a graphic. If that is simply your logo on every page that surely is enough.

Yes, Horizontal Scrolling Is Bad

Standard Web pages usually for Dreamweaver default are 600 (h) x 480 (w) or 640 (h) x 480 (w) and Flash defaults are 1024 (h) x 768 (w) or 550 (h) x 400 (w). These are measured in pixels, the unit of measure used for the screen. When staying inside these lines you eliminate horizontal scrolling. Website viewers already scroll vertically and don’t want to scroll horizontally. Again in our zoom zoom society that just wastes time.

If you have horizontal scrolling it is guaranteed that less than half of your viewers are choosing not to scroll over. So stay inside the lines.

Yes, Your Site Can Go Out of Date

Have you ever seen a Website that says, Last Updated: January 2007? Or How about, Last Updated: January 2004? You’ve probably seen something similar. In the Web world outdated means three to five months. Updates are important because they prove to your viewers that you care about their interest. Keep their interest by maintaining and updating your site. Don’t get carried away not everything standard has to be updated, but a few minor additions or deletions are always good.

These three features gone wrong can discourage viewers and down ratings. If you have too much information, horizontal scrolling and / or out of date information you can fix it in a flash. You can also simply avoid them completely.

Increase The Readability Of Your Website In 5 Easy Steps

The goal of your website should be to guide the consumer through your page and have them take the action you desire, whether that action be a newsletter sign up or a sale.

Websites that make their visitors work to read them always turn a large percentage of potential consumers away. Text colors that clash with the background color, undersized fonts, and big blocks of text are some common problems that can determine whether or not the website is successful.

Here are 5 tips that will help you increase the flow and readability of your website:

1. Make the font size big enough to read. No matter who your target audience is they don’t want to strain their eyes trying to read tiny text. The standard internet text is Arial size 2 (12 pt). You can use other fonts and sizes if you wish but keep in mind that Arial size 2 is popular because it’s easy to read.

2. Format your text using CSS. Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) are the way to go – use one style sheet and control how text looks on your entire site. Make a change to the style sheet and your whole site is updated. It makes things a lot simpler.

3. Spell check everything. Misspellings make your website look tacky and unorganized. Nothing irritates visitors more than having to guess what your message is because the web page has spelling errors. It makes you look like you don’t care enough to get it right. Take a minute and use the spell check tool. Unless your writing a 200 page book, it should take you about 1 to 5 minutes to spell check your work.

4. Make the text contrast with its background. Black text on white background is the easiest to read. In most cases, the more contrast, the better. Black-on-white or white-on-black are examples of the highest contrast you can get. But be forewarned, white text on a black background creates a “glow” which often times negatively affect your website. Red on Blue creates the glow effect as well. You can use colors if you like, but as a rule of thumb if you have to squint to read your text, there’s not enough contrast.

5. Break up blocks of text. No matter how good a writer you are, people don’t want to read endless pages of text. Using sub-headlines between paragraphs and bullet points is a great way to break up those text blocks.

Generally, you should only use bullet points once throughout your web page, but in some cases using bullet points more than once might be necessary. If you’re selling a product or service you should always list the benefits. Bullet points change the pace of the writing and slow down the scanning.

Making your websites content more legible is easy and it doesn’t take a lot of time. Your website will look more professional and your visitors will tend to stick around longer, making those visitors more likely to become a customers.

Visitors Leave After Seeing My Home Page – Aye, Carumba!

One of the keys to a profitable web site is analyzing your hits to visitor ratio. What does it mean if you have a low hit to visitor ratio? This article provides the answer

No Depth

An effective means for analyzing web site traffic is to look at the number of hits per visitor for a time period. To do this, you simply divide the number of hits by the number of visitors for the time period in question. Time periods can be a day, week, month or quarter of a year. Don’t look at any time smaller than a day as the data may not create an accurate picture of the traffic.

Assume you have the best damn dang hair net site on the net. You have over 1,000 hair nets of every variation, color, material and weave. For those of you not “in the know”, a hair net is one of those things people working in fast food places have to wear. I have no idea why, but I am sure there was a lawsuit once that makes complete and total sense.

Anyway, a site with over 1,000 hair nets should have a massive number of pages. Logically, every visitor to the site should click through more than a few pages while looking for the perfect specimen. Unfortunately, you find the server stats tell a different story.

In reviewing server stats, you learn that on average the site receives 5,000 visitors a day and 10,000 hits. Dividing hits by visitors, you discover to your dismay each visitor is looking at only two pages on average. This information is supported by the fact you’re only averaging a few sales a day. Aye, Carumba!

There are a few possible reasons for this poor performance:

1. Slow Site: A site with 1,000 products is going to require a very careful database design. I would guess 70 percent of database sites are fatally slow. By fatally, I mean they load so slowly that most dial-up users can’t navigate in the site. We are talking 30 to 40 second page load times. If you have this problem, you are immediately losing the 45 percent of people using dial-up.

2. Click Fraud: If you are running a PPC campaign, you must track the clicks in the campaign. A low hit to visitor ratio can often mean your PPC ads are being artificially clicked as such clickers rarely venture into the internal pages of a site.

3. Poor Advertising: This one is purely your fault. Your advertising must focus on keywords that are relevant to your site. If you are selling hair nets, don’t place ads under “hair styling.” If you do, people will click your ad, see hair nets and immediately leave. Know your limitations!

There can be a variety of reasons for low hit to visitor ratios. More often than not, slow load times are the answer. If the site is fast, then you need to dig deeper so you can figure out a way to make your visitors do the same.
